Selected text is sent to OpenAI solely to generate the fact-check. It is not stored, sold, or used to train AI models. Your account is secured through Google Firebase. Payments are handled by Stripe — we never see your card details.

WaitWhat?! is a Chrome browser extension that provides AI-powered fact-checking. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. We do not sell your personal information to anyone, and we do not share it for advertising or marketing purposes.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and a hashed password, stored securely in Firebase Authentication.

Text you submit for fact-checking. When you highlight text and request a fact-check, that text is sent to our servers for processing. We store a brief record of each check (the claim, verdict, and timestamp) in your account history.

Payment information. Subscription payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number or payment details — only your subscription status.

Usage data. We store the date of your last fact-check. We do not collect browsing history, page content beyond what you explicitly highlight, or any other activity on your device.

2. How We Use Your Information

To authenticate you and manage your subscription
To process your fact-check requests using AI
To maintain your account and check history
To send transactional emails related to your account or subscription

We do not use your information to build advertising profiles, sell leads, or contact you for marketing without your consent.

3. Third-Party Services

To operate the extension, we share data with the following service providers only to the extent necessary:

OpenAI — The text you submit is sent to OpenAI's API for analysis. Your name, email, and account details are never sent to OpenAI.
SerpAPI — When web search is enabled, a search query derived from your submitted text is sent to retrieve relevant results. No personal information is included.
Stripe — Your email and payment information are processed by Stripe to manage subscriptions.
Google Firebase — We use Firebase Authentication and Firestore to store account and subscription data.

We do not share your information with any other third parties.

4. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us. Data is permanently removed within 30 days of a deletion request.

5. Data Security

All data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS. API keys are stored server-side and are never included in the extension. Firebase Security Rules ensure users can only access their own data.

6. Children's Privacy

WaitWhat?! is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

7. Your Rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information at any time by contacting us. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
